Make Your Own Self Soothing Kit (DBT - Self Soothe)

If you were to make a self-soothing kit that you could easily take with you wherever you go, what would be inside?  The goal would be to bring at least one item that soothes each of your senses.  I am considering putting together such a kit, and here is what I imagine I will include:

Smell:  A stick of cinnamon or some powdered cinnamon in a little jar, some Good Earth tea bags

Touch: A really soft small stuffed animal or a piece of very soft, fluffy fabric.

Taste: Some butterscotch hard candies and some chocolate

Sight: A picture of a something that makes me smile

Hearing: An app on my phone (which I always have with me) that plays soothing sounds

What might YOU include in your self-soothing kit?  Do you already have one? What do you have inside?

Thanks for reading.
More Soon.

P.S.  It's also nice to find a special container to put everything in.  I like this:

  1. This is really helpful. I feel comforted (and excited) just thinking about making a self-soothe kit.

    1. Thank you for your kind comment. I am excited for you, too! ♥

  2. One of our DBT assignments this week is to make a Distress Tolerance/Self-Soothe kit. We don't have to bring it in next week, just discuss what we've put in it.

  3. What a cool idea. I'm going to start thinking about what to use for self soothing. Thank you.

  4. I have just finished my years dbt course and the last module was distress tolerance repeated; it was also the day that we were asked to bring in our self soothing boxes which we did;
    mine includes - jasmine incense; a piece of amythyst in a pretty see through bag; a mindfulness cd; chocolate; incense cones and a lighter and terracotta dish to burn them in; face packs to soothe, relax and pick off; red food colouring - to use instead of self harm and a booklet on how to look after myself if i do; lavendar essential oil, hand cream and body lotion; a squidgy smiley face toy; various nail varnishes,beads; a skin brush;
    i have tried to include things for all of my senses and alternatives to self harm - which i have not done since starting dbt;
    i also have a book with a nice cover to write some feelings and thoughts in and some coloured pens;
    i chose a box i like so that is part of it and the ritual of opening it and slowing finding things i want/need to use;

    i keep it near me and most often use the hand cream;

    everyones in our group was totally personal to themselves and it was a lovely thing to do; i would really recommend creating your own,taking time to do it and add/remove things to it as you need to;

  5. Thanks for the ideas. I shall be trying this with [for] my son. Great to see what other people come up with.
