Relax Your Nervous System (with music and meditation)

We all have those days when you feel overwhelmed and exhausted with emotion. You know — those days when your muscles ache from all of the tension you’re holding in your shoulders and neck, and you wish you could just go and get a massage?

When that isn’t possible, what can you do?

In DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), we learn how important it is to take care of ourselves and to soothe our nervous system.  Listening to a relaxing meditation track or to mellow music can be a good way to practice the skill of Self-Soothing.

Here are some of my favorites. Are any of yours on my list?

Ethereal music tracks by Dido, Sarah Brightman, and the like.  Explicit language warning: someone says the “f word” on one of the tracks.

“Come Away With Me”by Norah Jones

Nice post. When you listen to relaxation music your attention is slowly starting to be directed away from what you are thinking about to the experience of the music. As you think or experience more and more of the music your stress level will start to drop or lessen. Thanks for sharing!
