Introducing DBT Golden Nuggets from HealingFromBPD.org. These will be shorter posts that appear now and then on the blog and that address a quick tip around Borderline Personality Disorder and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. I hope you find them helpful!
Today’s DBT Golden Nugget is: Yes We Can!
DBT even appears in my dreams! Last night, I dreamed that a young woman was crying on the bus, her head in her hands. I asked her what was wrong.
Tearfully, she replied, “I can’t keep a job! I’ll never keep a job! What am I going to do if I can’t work?!?”
I immediately thought of mine and my readers frequent expressions of similar fears due to our BPD diagnosis:
“I can’t keep a job.”
“I can’t have a normal relationship.”
“I’ll never be able to finish school!”
I looked this young lady straight in the eyes and said:
“Yes you CAN keep a job. What you can’t do right now is regulate your emotions and your behavioral responses to their intensity…but you can LEARN how to do this with DBT. Once you can master some skills, you will be much better equipped to keep a job. The odds will be more in your favor.”
The young woman smiled at me and hugged me.
One interpretation of dreams is that we are all of the characters, and our mind is using the dream space to sort out conflicts we haven’t resolved during the day. Maybe I’ve addressed a long held question involving fears of “can’t.”
